Network cables or UTP cables are cables that connect modems, computers, experia boxes, etc. to the internet.
These cables are custom-made with a connector already connected. Yet it often happens that people prefer to pull a cable themselves because, for example, a specific length is required. In that case, it is best to purchase a UTP cable yourself and connect UTP connectors to it. This way you can make a cable that fully meets your own requirements.
To make your own network cable with connected connectors, you do need a few things:
- RJ45 Shrink plier
- Network cable (Cat5e, Cat6 of Cat7)
- Cutter (plier with cutter)
- Cable stripper
- RJ45 Connectors
Keep in mind that a network cable can not be longer than 100 meters. If the cable is longer than 100 meters, you may experience data loss. A Cat6 cable is recommended for normal home use. This usually fits plenty of your daily requirements. A Cat5e cable is generally not recommended for normal home use, because it has a slightly lower bandwidth. It would be a shame if you have to install your cables all over again in the near future.
To connect a connector you first start by stripping the jacket of the cable. This is best done by making a circular movement over the mantle with a cable stripper. Do not press too hard. If you press too hard, the wires can be damaged. The easiest way is not to cut through the mantle completely, but only to make a very small cut. When you have stripped around the entire mantle, you can pull it off.

If all goes well, you will now see four pairs of wires. These wires are twisted together in pairs. You do not have to strip it. It is important, however, to place these wires in the right order. This is a precise job and also of highest importancy. If you fail to lay the wires in the right order, the network cable will not function properly. The order in which the veins should come to lie, is as follows:

After you have properly laid the order of the wires, press them firmly into the connector. Make sure that all veins have exactly the same length. Check this by making sure they are all tight in the front of the connector. Once you have done this, you can place the connector in the RJ45-plier. Then the plier will be firmly closed. Now the copper parts of the connector will be pressed into the UTP cable and connected.
