How to make a Cat5 cable?

How to make a Cat5 cable?

Internet, almost everyone is using this at home. Naturally, you want all your network devices to work together in a trouble-free manner. But how do you actually ensure this? Internet cables are often used for the most stable internet connection possible.

Internet cables are also called UTP cables. A UTP cable is an 8 core cable that is used to connect network devices. The length of the UTP cable may not exceed 100 meters. If the cable is longer than 100 meters, the risk of data loss is much bigger.

There are different categories of UTP cables. From UTP CAT5E to CAT7. The rule of thumb for this is: The higher the category, the higher the data transfer of the cable. Below is an overview of the various categories and speeds:

  • CAT5E – To 1000Mbit/s, frequency 100 MHz
  • CAT6 – To 1000Mbit/s, frequency 250 MHz
  • CAT6A – To 10.000Mbit/s, frequency 500 MHz
  • CAT7 – To 10.000Mbit/s, frequency from 600 MHz to 1500 MHz.

You also have a choice in how the cable is shielded. Is the cable located in an environment where you are often bothered by interference signals? Such as a room where many COAX, electricity or power  cables are located. Then it is advisable to purchase a cable where the cores are shielded. These cables ensure that you do not have to suffer from interference.

The subdivision of shields of the cable are:

  • U/UTP- No shield
  • F/UTP- All veins are shielded with aluminium foil
  • S/UTP- Coating of tin, copper braided around all veins
  • SF/UTP- Aluminium foil + coating of tin, copper braided around all veins
  • U/FTP- Aluminium foil around every single veincouple
  • F/FTP- Aluminium foil around all veins + every single veincouple
  • S/FTP- Coating of tin, copper braided around all veins + aluminium foil around every single
               veincouple

The big advantage of making a Cat5 yourself is that you can make the cable itself to length. To make a UTP Cat5 cable, you need some tools. You need: a cable stripper or knife, and a UTP pliers. A UTP plier will clamp all veins in the connector in the right way.

You first start by stripping the UTP cable so that all the wires are visible. Here you will see 4 pairs of veins with different colors:

  • 1: White-brown and brown
  • 2:White-orange and orange
  • 3:White-green and green
  • 4: White-blue and blue

Then cut all veins straight to 2.5 cm from the sheath of the cable. Then carefully push the veins and cable into the connector. Please make sure that all the veins are ordered in the right way.

If everything went well, you can make a permanent connection with using the UTP plier. Now press the connector into the UTP plier and squeeze the tongs tightly. The connector is now properly connected. Before you start laying the cable, first connect it directly to the router and the PC or laptop. This way you can check if everything is perfect. You better check that now instead of the cable is laying in the wall or ground!
